In southern Santa Barbara County, the high cost of living and .5% vacancy rate means hundreds of low-income families and individuals are forced to live in overcrowded, unsafe, or cost-burdened housing conditions, or commute long distances to and from work. Habitat for Humanity SSBC is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their housing conditions. Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all.
Affordable housing provides more than just a roof over someone’s head. It also provides:
- Stability for families and children.
- Sense of dignity and pride.
- Health, physical safety and security.
- Increase of educational and job prospects.
