Habitat for Humanity hosted the future homeowners, as well as staff, supporters, media and elected officials, for a groundbreaking ceremony to kick off construction of three affordable homes approved for the vacant lot at 4949 Sawyer Ave.
“With the stability of a permanent home, families can devote more attention to their jobs, education and health. As the cycle of poverty is broken, their children benefit, neighborhoods are revitalized and entire communities improve. Habitat is proud to provide tangible, life-changing results for these families,” stated Jon Peterson, CEO of Habitat for Humanity South Santa Barbara County.
Yet the day was met with an event and a feeling that even the rain couldn’t dampen. For April 18 saw the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of three new homes for three deserving families, and emotion surrounding the event ensured that some of the tears shed that day did not belong to the weather. The day began with Carpinteria Community Member Marybeth Carty, who explained that Habitat for Humanity plans to build three homes for three families: The Huerta, Lopez and Polunets families. Of these families, 14 new individuals will be provided a better living situation, 8 of which are children.
On April 18, Habitat for Humanity broke ground on its latest development site in Carpinteria. This is the nonprofit’s fourth project in Santa Barbara County. County Supervisor Das Williams noted that Carpinteria has the lowest housing production in the county and hoped for more projects like this.
